What does a web developer do?

Developers at Glick Productions can handle all of your web presence needs. We can help you with color schemes, graphics, design, layout, content, and style. We make your dreams, reality. Whatever you want, even if you don't know what you want, we can do it for you. The more technical answer is that we write the code that your client's browser reads and deciphers and allows your clients to see your web site. We are the computer geeks that make you look good.

How does a web site work?

A web site is a collection of files stored on a server. Your computer connects to the server, retrieves the files, opens them with your browser, and displays them on your screen. This is the simplest explanation I can offer. If you are interested in learning more, Google is a great place to look up information on anything you desire. Sorry to disappoint, but I could fill page after page on how a web site works.

What is a domain name?

A domain name is the name of your site. (Ex: www.glickproductions.us) This acts like a telephone number. You can't just pick up the phone and start talking to the right person, you need to dial their phone number. A domain name is how your browser knows which server to connect to.

What is hosting?

The files for your web site are stored on a server so other computers can access them. You rent the space on the computer for your files. This process is known as hosting a web site.

What is a server?

A server, in this sense, is a computer dedicated to holding web site files and e-based programs, and is fast and powerful enough to handle many incoming and outgoing requests at once. The average PC is not set up to be a server.

What is updating?

Many sites need to be changed on a weekly or monthly basis. Some on a daily basis. These changes may be drastic, or just minor details. Regularly scheduled changes to a web site are known as updates. Updating services are available through Glick Productions. However, there is a chance that we can design your site in such a way as to allow you to update yourself. This is called content management systems and depends entirely on the web site in question. Our representatives are able to determine whether or not this is an option for you.

How do I get started?

Before you contact Glick, or any other web developer, you'll want to answer a few questions.

  • Who will be coming to my site?
  • What do I want them to be able to do?
  • What do I want to be able to do?
  • What domain name would I like for my site?

You will also want to try to decide on color schemes, layouts, pictures, and graphics. Search the web for sites similar to yours and find out what strikes your attention. Make a list of things you have seen that you love and things that you hate.

Can you design my logo?

Glick Productions offers many services. Among them are graphic design. We can also take digital pictures of you or your product. We can create animated projects. We design business cards, can help you with your entire corporate image and so much more. Take a few minutes while you are here and explore our site.

Who is Glick?

Glick Productions was founded in 2001 by Rick Berg and Glenn Hartong. We are located in Summit County in Northeast Ohio. In 2008, we were joined by Mallory Taylor Design as our design team. We are proud to say that we are 100% American owned and operated.

What are your prices?

Our development fees are $100 an hour. Our design fees are $100 an hour. Domain registration can be free with hosting plan, and hosting plans are generally less than $30/month. As of September 14, 2008.

How long is the building process?

Normally, a basic site will take 3 to 5 weeks for completion. Obviously, the more involved the site, the longer it will take. Note*: This is not development time used to calculate price.

What types of programming knowledge do you posses?

Glick Productions uses the most current variety of programs and programming languages of the industry. We use Adobe Dreamweaver®, Adobe Fireworks®, Adobe Flash®, ASP, ASP.NET, Java, Javascript, AJAX, RSS, PHP, Adobe ColdFusion®, and Adobe Photoshop® CS to name of few of our favorite choices.

For database connections we use; Microsoft's Access, SQL, MySQL, and Oracle.

As designers, we are constantly testing new software to keep abreast of the latest advances in an ever changing technology.

What is ColdFusion?

In a nut shell..."ColdFusion is an application server and software development framework used for the development of computer software in general, and dynamic web sites in particular. In this regard, ColdFusion is a similar product to Microsoft ASP.NET, Java Enterprise Edition or PHP.

The primary feature of ColdFusion is its associated scripting language, ColdFusion Markup Language (CFML), which compares to JSP, C#, or PHP and resembles HTML in syntax." (excerpt from Wikipedia)

What is JSON?

"JSON (JavaScript Object Notation) (Pronounced like the boy's name Jason) is a lightweight computer data interchange format. It is a text-based, human-readable format for representing simple data structures and associative arrays (called objects). The JSON format is often used for transmitting structured data over a network connection in a process called serialization. Its main application is in Ajax web application programming, where it serves as an alternative to the traditional use of the XML format." (excerpt from Wikipedia)

Why can't I find my site on Google, MSN Search, or Yahoo?

First, let me explain the two types of search results. There is organic and paid.

Organic search results happen "naturally". These are result rankings that have not been paid for. At Glick Productions we optimize your site for the best possible organic placement in search engines. This is done by using your key phrases in strategic areas of your site. This optimization means that your site is ready to be placed high in the result set. It doesn't guarantee a high ranking.

Let me continue before I lose you, and we'll come back to this concept.

Paid ranking, or Pay Per Click advertising consists of the search results you see at the top and right of the page at most major search engines. These results will somehow be marked as paid advertisements. These results are being prominently displayed based on the amount of money the advertiser was willing to pay for that particular position. Please see your preferred search engines pricing policies.

PPC results are based on your willingness to pay, not your site's design. Hence, the major difference between organic and paid results.

Now back to the organic results. Like I stated, Glick Productions optimizes your site to be search engine friendly. Your site will be easy to index and rank. This will help with your organic positioning. There is also multiple other factors that help in determining page rank. Your relevancy to the search in question is one. If a user is searching for "pink tennis rackets" and you sell tennis rackets, you will be in the results...somewhere. Because the user was looking for "pink" rackets, you won't rank as high. This is relevancy.

The more click throughs you acquire (the number of people who found you as a search result and clicked on your link) will also help raise your rank.

The number of mutual relevant links that other sites have to you, will help your rank.

As you can see, much of organic ranking is out of your hands.

New pages may take up to 8 weeks to even make it into one of the major search engines. Read this. Remember, there is only three major engines available today. Google , MSN Search, and Yahoo Search. All other engines are using results from these three or some conglomeration.
